San Diego cremation costs

Last updated2026-09-144 min read

By Cremation by ZIP editorial. Comparison and education site — not a funeral home, crematory, or cemetery.

Typical cremation cost ranges for San Diego ZIP 92101. Estimates for education. No invented funeral-home listings.

Quick summary

ZIP 92101 is downtown San Diego on this site’s San Diego–metro estimate band — a step above the national NFDA 2023 median, not a local General Price List. San Diego is an incorporated city in San Diego County. We have not yet published a Cemetery and Funeral Bureau–checked San Diego funeral establishment on this page. California’s 2024 NFDA cremation share near 70.5% does not set a downtown package.

Typical costs for ZIP 92101

These figures are a San Diego, California metro typical range. They start from the NFDA 2023 member General Price List study national medians, then a documented ZIP multiplier. The dollar ranges on this site are typical local estimates for education. They are not a quote from a specific firm and not a contract.

Ask the licensed provider for an itemized General Price List before you buy. Under the FTC Funeral Rule, you have a right to that list. Read the full consumer-rights explainer on the General Price List guide. Package definitions stay on the direct cremation and cremation vs. burial guides — this page does not reprint them.

Local planning in San Diego

Downtown ZIP 92101 sits on the bay, next to the airport (SAN) and the port. Relatives often fly into Lindbergh Field and stay in a downtown or Little Italy hotel while they decide between direct cremation and a later gathering in a rented hall. That airport-adjacent pattern is a schedule and a transfer question. It is not a price this calculator can quote.

The San Diego–metro band starts from NFDA 2023 national medians times a documented San Diego-area multiplier. It is an education window for 92101, not a quote for Chula Vista, Oceanside, or every 921xx ZIP. A family in North County should still ask the firm they actually hire.

We do not invent a San Diego funeral-home row. Use the Department of Consumer Affairs license search and ask any firm you call for an itemized General Price List. A high statewide cremation share does not mean a downtown waterfront firm is inexpensive. Housing and staff costs along the bay can sit above an inland Imperial County ZIP.

Cemetery plot, niche, vault, and marker charges — including grounds in Mission Valley or Point Loma that people name in conversation — are cemetery bills. This page does not publish them. This page also does not state bay or coastal scattering rules.

Cremation by ZIP does not operate in San Diego. We do not cremate, bury, or arrange services.

Paperwork and who to call

A death in the City of San Diego is registered in San Diego County. The Assessor/Recorder/County Clerk is the custodian of county vital records (ARCC). The county Office of Vital Records and Statistics registers recent events and publishes how to request a death certificate, including a $26 copy fee on the pages we cite. Confirm the live fee and whether you should start with the recorder or with vital records for a death that just occurred.

CDPH-VR still keeps the statewide file and lists $26 per certified VS 112 death copy as of January 1, 2026. CDPH-VR tells families a recent death is often faster from the county of death than from Sacramento. San Diego City Hall is not the vital-records counter.

San Diego County has its own medical examiner system for deaths under that office’s jurisdiction. Not every downtown death is an Examiner case. Ask the licensed funeral establishment you hire. Do not treat the Examiner as a walk-in funeral home.

California licenses the funeral establishment through the Cemetery and Funeral Bureau. Confirm any number on search.dca.ca.gov. The FTC Funeral Rule applies in San Diego: itemized list, alternative container, outside urn.

No verified licensed listing is published yet for San Diego. Use the calculator, ask local licensed providers for a General Price List, or claim a listing if you operate a licensed firm. We do not invent funeral homes.

Questions to take to a licensed provider

This is a shopping list, not a script that binds any firm in San Diego.

  1. May I have your current General Price List in writing, including the direct-cremation line?
  2. What is the price of direct cremation when we use your alternative container?
  3. If we bring an urn purchased elsewhere, what — if anything — do you charge to handle it?
  4. Does your transfer area include downtown ZIP 92101 and SAN, or is port / airport mileage extra?
  5. For a death that just occurred, should we request the certified copy from county vital records or from the recorder, and what is the cash-advance line?

Frequently asked questions

What does this site show for San Diego ZIP 92101?

The calculator uses this site’s San Diego–metro estimate band for 92101. Those dollars are NFDA 2023 medians times a documented metro multiplier. They are not a downtown funeral home’s General Price List. We have not published a verified San Diego listing yet.

Where do I order a death certificate for a death in San Diego?

Start with San Diego County — the Office of Vital Records and Statistics for very recent events, and the Assessor/Recorder/County Clerk as custodian of county copies. CDPH-VR’s VS 112 process is the statewide backup. Confirm current fees on those official pages.

Why is there no San Diego funeral home on this page?

We only publish a firm after a person checks the legal name and address on the California license search. That check has not been completed for a San Diego establishment yet. Use the Department of Consumer Affairs search rather than an invented directory row.
